What have you heard now (from or about Jesus) , that you may not understand until later? The crucifixion and the scourging etc is here anticipated as written in the OT too. The disciples cannot understand or maybe they cannot accept that the Son of God will undergo all this. Let alone understanding about the Resurrection - like when he said that he would rebuild the temple in 3 days. Thing is that we know beforehand for the disciples it was all new. On the other hand they actually witnessed it all - apart from not recognising him straight away on the road to Emmaus. We have to trust them and they had to trust God. Jesus himself?
